Certainly, there are ancient roots to the notion of dark spirits accompanying the winter cold. The holidays have always been strange times with vivid folklore and shadowy archetypes of ghosts and demons. Krampus is just one more reminder of what Christmas was. Now, it has come to represent the cynicism of the age where commercialism and greed have soured people about the season.
